This weekend is the Sacramento-area's 31st Annual Holiday Show Of Hands, which will feature more than 150 vendors, including handcrafted merchandise, gourmet food items, antiques, collectibles, gifts and decorator items. The event is 9 a.m.-7 p.m. today, Dec. 5, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. tomorrow, Dec. 6, at St. John’s Parish Hall, Tralee Center, gym and classrooms at 5701 Locus Avenue, Carmichael. Also for sale will be lunch, refreshments, and there's an espresso bar, Irish coffee and wine. Have your picture taken with Santa from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. each day. Parking and admission are free.

How to Be a Vendor: New vendors are added each year. Jurying is the first Wednesday in March. Potential vendors are asked to bring samples of their work or collections from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. (no appointments) to St. John’s Parish Hall. The merriment will include port and food pairings at Revolution Wines, a MARRS Building open house and tree lighting, and an art competition and holiday craft fair. Among the musical offerings are the Wonderland Concert and Philharmonic Winter Wine & Jazz. Revisit history with the Emigrant Christmas at Sutter's Fort. The 12 days are also about helping others with a blood drive at the BloodSource and a "Give a Gift, Get a Gift" to benefit the Children's Receiving Home of Sacramento. There are three events to partake in today at local Sacramento bookstores: Avid Reader at the Tower will feature at 2 p.m. author Jeremy Evans discussing his book, In Search of Powder, and at 4 p.m. author Mike Corbett who will talk about his book, Poetry of Architecture. Time Tested Books and Midtown Monthly at 7 p.m. will hold its Living Library event featuring Jeffrey Callison, host of Capital Public Radio's Insight program, who will be talking with David Watts Barton, editor-in-chief of Sacramento Press. Signs promoting craft fairs seemed everywhere today. Share where you went! For example, the Banner Mountain Artisans are holding their holiday show this weekend, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. each day, at the Elks Club, Highway 49, Nevada City. Do you know the background to this event? As told in the group's website: "Banner Mountain Artisans was started by a handful of creative artisans in 2004 who offered their wares at a holiday show held at four houses on Banner Mountain in Nevada City, California. As our reputation grew, more quality artisans were added ... In 2007, the attendance exceeded all expectations and outgrew the neighborhood." That's when the show moved to the Elks Club. The goal of Banner Mountain Artisans "to offer quality hand-created products at reasonable prices to an appreciative market." Congratulations to ARK 2000 for winning Sacramento Magazine's "Best Haven for Weary Souls," as announced in my November issue, page 113. There's a beautiful photo to go with, and I hope someone will share who the featured elephant is. Meanwhile, reserve next October's third Saturday for the PAWS Elephant Grape Stomp 'n' Chomp, An Afternoon In TUSKany, in San Andreas. PAWS' founders Pat Derby and Ed Stewart and volunteers were on hand to talk about the animals and the sanctuary, which also is home to lions, tigers and bears. Another highlight is the Ms. TUSKany Pageant. Congratulations to Wanda, who was crowned Ms. TUSKany 2010, with Mara voted first runner-up. This annual 21-and-over event features wine tasting, hors d' oeuvres, a silent auction, a vegetarian luncheon, giftshop and tours of the sanctuary. At the event were Il Fornaio and these wineries: Black Sheep Winery, Bodega Del Sur Winery, Brice Station Vintners, Chateau Routon Winery, Chatom Vineyards, Gianelli Vineyards, Hovey Wine, Irish Family Vineyards, Ironstone Vineyards and Winery, Milliaire Winery, Stevenot Winery, Sonora Winery, Twisted Oak Winery, and Zucca Mountain Vineyards. Craft fairs are in the air. For example, take this weekend's Winterfaire, put on by the Craft Guild of Nevada County, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley. Fortunately, with this winter-like weather, the event's inside. Parking is free; $1 admission. Lots of crafts and friendly crafters. You'll need to take at least two turns around the room to really take them all in. As just a sampling of the 45 juried vendors: there's The Chocolate Lady's peppermint white chocolate popcorn ($6 a bag) and other sweet treats, Metal Art Originals by JM, custom crystal and bead jewelry by Lorraine Barba, and chili, dip and rice seasoning mixes by "It'z Heavenly Gourmet Foods." "Thirds" Opens Next Weekend at Sacramento's Thistle Dew Dessert Theatre

Opening soon on the Sacramento Thistle Dew Dessert Theatre stage will be "Thirds," a play by New York playwright Jacob Appel. It's the norm that this 39-seat theatre presents original dramas, comedies and musicals by local playwrights, but "Thirds" is theatre founder and playwright Thomas M. Kelly's winner in his 2010 New Play Program. He writes, "Jacob has written an 'out of the box' comedy about three sisters who inherit the family home from their mother. They attempt to divide the house between them, until the 'free spirit' sister takes matters into her own hands... in an industrial way." The play will feature Lynnette Blaney, Gladys Acosta, April Maylene and Noemi Rios. It will be directed by Micail Buse. 'Craft Fair for a Cause - Crafting to Fight Cancer' Debuts

An online craft fair called "Craft Fair for a Cause - Crafting to Fight Cancer" has been created by a childhood cancer survivor and crafter, Kat of Designs by Kat, to raise funds for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. On her Web site, she writes, "Through my little etsy business I have met so many amazing, talented and giving artists and crafters and I am so excited for the support they have shown in helping get this craft fair for a cause up and running. All the items have been kindly donated so 100% of your purchase will be donated to the American Cancer Society Relay For Life." Her team is called "The Fight Back Boxing Company," and is based in Santa Rosa. A variety of crafts are for sale ranging from bracelets, necklaces and purses to a needle felting kit for crafters-to-be. Thank you to the Downtown Sacramento Partnership's online press room for the following information: "Contemporary artists Amber Dias, Sally Worthing and Kelli Trapani will display their latest works as part of a temporary exhibit, 'Only Time - Reflecting the female perspective.' The exhibit will be on display in vacant storefronts at the 800 J Lofts along 8th, 9th and J streets. 'Art is an important part of any city and especially downtown,' said Dias. The Sutter Cancer Breast Cancer Quilt Auction begins accepting quilt donations on Sept. 1, 2010, for its Nov. 5, 2011, event to benefit the center’s breast cancer treatment and research programs. Donations will be accepted through Sept. 1, 2011. Quilts may be of any size, color or design. The quilts must be new, quilted, not tied, and have a 4-inch hanging sleeve on the back. Most area quilt shops will accept donated quilts and each local quilt guild is expected to have an auction representative to collect quilts as well.

2011 Schedule
Auction Day has been set for Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, in Sacramento, when a live auction of 50 or so quilts and quilted fabric art will begin at 10 a.m. Auction Day will also see the closing of the silent auction, which is scheduled to open on Oct. 1, 2011. During October 2011, the public will be welcome to visit the center, which will be filled with nearly 500 quilts, to enjoy the quilt display and place silent auction bids on their favorite quilts.

Background
This will be the fifth quilt auction held to benefit the Sutter Cancer Center. The four previous auctions raised more than $425,000 for Sutter’s programs. In total, quilters from all over Northern California donated more than 1,900 quilts and quilted fabric art for the event. Organizers write that the 2011 auction is "expected to include everything from fabric postcards to king-sized bed quilts, from quilt designs reminiscent of past generations to quilted works of textile art that appear to be oil on canvas."

"California in Focus," a photography exhibition, has its debut at the California State Archives through October. In an announcement from California Secretary of State Debra Bowen's office, the exhibit is described as highlighting "some of the more than 185,000 photographs housed in the State Archives, taken by journalists, government officials and others over the past 160 years. The photographs depict California’s natural wonders, political campaigns, infrastructure, government, and the struggles and triumphs of Californians." "Do You Take This Immigrant" is a full-page article in the Sunday New York Times, with an online "Test Your Partner" quiz with "sample questions from the interviews couples go through to be eligible for a green card." Take it. Try out the questions. For example, "Do you know what color your spouse's toothbrush is?" If you're wondering why in Sacramento I'm not reading The Sacramento Bee it's because I can't. It didn't arrive. Fortunately, The New York Times did, but I sure wish customer service would respond about my Bee's whereabouts.

"Women’s Wisdom Art Portrait Project" is the title of a show that opens on 2nd Saturday June 12 at the Tangent Gallery, 2900 Franklin Blvd. (at 4th Ave.) in Sacramento. The event runs from 6-10 p.m. Helen Plenert, program manager of Women's Wisdom Art, a program of the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services, writes, "Join us for an evening of portraits of ordinary women." Sacramento digital artist and photographer Ann Tracy recruited Woodland photographer George Streng to work on this project with her. Tracy and Streng wanted to go beyond the standard editorial portrait to create a post-modern type of portraiture that includes artwork created by the women to celebrate their journeys to increase their self-esteem and give them a sense of pride in themselves and what they have accomplished. Women's Wisdom Project offers a variety of art experiences for women who want to broaden their creative lives. Classes, which include lunch, are free and taught by professional artists. The Mendocino Coast Writers Conference will feature days and evenings full of morning writing sessions, workshops, readings and keynote speakers. Horstman is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in hundreds of publications worldwide and on the Internet, from USA Today to The Primer on the Rheumatic Diseases to Comstock’s Business Magazine. She has also been a Washington correspondent, a journalism professor, and was the recipient of a Knight Science Journalism Fellowship at MIT and two Fulbright awards in Budapest, Hungary. Help A.J. Pero to "Stop the Pain" - Visit "Photographic Reflections on Breast Cancer" at Sac State

It's always personal, and that's how it started with Amy (A.J.) Pero. "My first experience with breast cancer occurred over 12 years ago when one of my work colleagues was diagnosed with breast cancer," are her words on the pink poster at the start of her "Stop the Pain: Photographic reflections on breast cancer" exhibition at California State University, Sacramento, Student Union (second floor) through March 24. By 2006, a sister was diagnosed. And then another sister. And then more friends and family. By then, this project, "Stop the Pain," was started. "Cancer of any type hurts - from the physical scars of the afflicted and their families and friends," she writes. Amy's abstract photos (of which she has more than 50 - 17 are in the exhibition) are startling bright blues, yellows, red, orange with silhouettes of women. Some of the photos are gray - conveying feelings of deep depression. Be warned her photos will probably make you cry. She asks you "express your feelings about breast cancer" on pieces of paper provided for a book. The notes from many, including students, are pinned to bulletin boards in the exhibit. Amy also wants you to send her photos, which she provides along with envelopes and address labels, to members of Congress, "urging them to increase breast cancer prevention and research funds." She also hopes to have her show travel to other cities and perhaps to other states. Contact her if you have connections. Did you "man up" enough for the stories read at Valerie Fioravanti's "Stories on Stage" debut Friday? Serena Williams said the phrase during her recent Australian Open match, and it just kind of fits Naomi Williams' "Snow Men," read by actor Cynthia Mitchell Speakman, and Jodi Angel's "The Skin from the Muscle," read by actor William Kay, especially Angel's description of gutting a deer. At least one person walked out, which means the other 70 or so didn't. Kirk Parker filmed the event, which was at the Sacramento Poetry Center, 1719 25th St., Midtown Sacramento. It was standing-room-only, so be on time for next month's event Friday, Feb. 26. Doors open at 7 p.m., with a reception, and the event begins at 7:30 p.m. A $5 donation is asked. An Addendum to the Above Post - Sacramento's Treasured Tea Time to Close

With the closing on Dec. 28 of Treasured Tea Time on Riverside Blvd., the Sacramento area will lose another wonderful tea room. Owner Cheryl writes on her Web site that she has made the decision to spend more time with her husband, who has been mobilized with the Army for seven of the nine years they have been open. He is now stationed at the Pentagon. "Treasured Teatime will close the Tea Room/Gift Shop and become Treasured Teatime Catering and Rental Services," she says. A recipe book will also be in the works. "I will greatly miss all of you, but it is time for me to be with my husband," she writes. Read the rest of her note here. In June, An Afternoon to Remember in Newcastle closed. Owner Amy also said she wanted to spend more time with her family. She now has Afternoon to Remember online, and also has a booth at the Antique Trove in Roseville where she sells her teas and cookbooks, and tea accessories, and has had scone, quiche and other demonstrations. The best way to stay in touch with Amy and her activities is to sign up for her e-newsletter. Of course tea room lovers understand about spending time with family, but we sure miss the camaraderie of a tea room, and of course the delicious delicacies we didn't have to prepare ourselves.

Sacramento has oh-so many wine bars, brew pubs and coffee houses. No complaints. But what about tea? and tea events. It's much, much more likely to find a happy hour than a high tea. As listed in Tea Time magazine, in February there's a Victorian Valentine Afternoon Tea and Etiquette at Everett Community College, Washington; a Love Letter Tea at Miss Spenser's Special-Teas in New Virginia, Iowa; a Fireside Tea Sampler Party at The Bohnet House, hosted by Anna Marie's Teas, in Liberty, Missouri; a Russian Tea Lecture at Miss Rosemarie's Special Teas in Birmingham, Alabama; and a Serendipi-Tea at The Drake Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. Call me the queen bee for this discovery, OK? You know the Sacramento bee store, officially Sacramento Beekeeping Supplies at 2110 X Street, really close to the Highway 50 onramp and where the Sacramento Antique Faire is held the second Sunday of every month? Well, it's selling the most delicious candy - Sacramento Local Honey Salt Water Taffy. Even more of a local story, the taffy is made by Kobasic's Candies, 5324 Riverside Blvd., Sacramento. Bags of the taffy are 3.95 each, and at the counter. As an aside, everyone buys their local honey there, right? There are many options, but a 2 lb. bear is $8; refills are less. Finally, here's the last secret. In addition to the candles, lotions, beekeeping supplies, etc., etc., etc., that's for sale in the bright cheerful store, you can buy honeycomb. Rumor is that Northern California chefs are buyers of this very same honeycomb to go along with their cheese plates. Yum!

California Lectures, Sacramento's literary arts series, offers the following speakers to conclude its 2009-'10 season: Abraham Verghese, National Book Critics Circle Award finalist, "Cutting for Stone, My Own Country," on Feb. 11; Ruth Reichl, James Beard Award / memorist / food critic, "Not Becoming My Mother, Garlic and Sapphires," on March 26; and Scott Simon, Peabody Award / Emmy Award, NPR Host - Weekend Edition Saturday, on April 26. Sacramento's 'Run to Feed the Hungry' Event on Thanksgiving Needs Volunteers

Looks like registration's up for runners and walkers, but down for volunteers for the Sacramento Food Bank's annual Thanksgiving morning "Run to Feed the Hungry." It's a 6 a.m. curtain call Thursday, Nov. 26, at California State University, Sacramento, and shifts end at 11 a.m. If you'd like to be one of the 100 volunteers who are still needed, here's the Web site link for signing up. By the way, Robin of the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services e-mailed Christine of the Volunteer Center of Sacramento, who e-mailed Whitnie, the center's president, who forwarded the whole correspondence to her workforce, etc., so let's make this viral request a success. Also by the way, volunteers do get one of the always-really-cool shirts. Finally, if you can't volunteer or run/walk this year, there's a special shopping opportunity. New this year as part of the fundraising effort is a backpack that will be for sale at REI Sacramento and on race day.

Valerie Fioravanti, a writer, writing instructor and coach who's now living in Sacramento (hooray for us!!!), alerted her Beginning Fiction class last night to two writing-related events this week, and one next week. Unfortunately, the two this week are both on Thursday. Choose from Writers Who Wine at 6 p.m. at Iron Steaks on Broadway or "California Lectures Presents John Irving" at The Crest, 7:30 p.m., with a 6:30 p.m. lecture, in downtown Sacramento. Tickets for John Irving are $35. On Monday, Nov. 9, Valerie and several other authors will be reading their fiction as part of an event sponsored by The Farallon Review at The Sacramento Poetry Center at 25th and R Streets in the midtown Sacramento area. Let me tell you about the play I saw today...

A meaty classic is playing through Nov. 15 at the Chautauqua Playhouse in the La Sierra Community Center in Carmichael. It's "A View From The Bridge" by Arthur Miller, and is described in the promotional copy in the following words: "Italian-American immigrant life colors this searing drama of love, obsession and revenge set in 1950s' Brooklyn." Directed by Lenore Sebastian, the play features Julie Bock-Betschart, Savannah Scott and Gil Sebastian. The theatre has two Web sites: here and here. However, the latter looks to be the most recent. Adult ticket prices are $17, and a seating chart of the approximately 100-seat theatre is online here. Shows are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays.

Amy, of the former An Afternoon to Remember Tea Room, is back with a a tea booth at the Antique Trove, 236 Harding Blvd. in Roseville. It's open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. She's in aisle A and is stocking 28 different teas, along with tea pots, tea cups and cookbooks (of course!). Most importantly, she has three presentations planned for Saturday, Oct. 17: 11 a.m. - Ways to Drink Tea; 1 p.m. - How to Make Cinnamon Pumpkin Pecan Scones; and 3 p.m. - Fall Tea Tasting.
